Common Brand Transaction Mistakes

Common Errors

Selling or transferring a brand is a legal change of ownership for registered personal property. 



Because every transfer is unique, requirements may vary depending on the type of registration and ownership situation. 



Common mistakes, such as incomplete forms, alterations to notarized documents, or missing supporting documentation, can delay the review and approval process.

Tips

Use a new blank form if corrections are needed, as notarized forms with alterations, white-outs, or scratch-outs cannot be accepted. 



If the current owner is deceased, submit an original or certified copy of the death certificate, as photocopies cannot be accepted. 



Reviewing your application before submission can help prevent unnecessary delays.

Best Practices

While the Board cannot provide legal advice, staff can explain registration types and help you understand the transfer process.

Submission Guidance

Fees

Fees must be submitted at the time of application, we accept cash, check, money orders, Visa, Master card, American Express and Discover. Credit card payments should be submitted on-line at webfeepay.com.

$200.00 for the first species and $100.00 for each additional species.

  • Example 1 – Application for cattle brand $200.00
  • Example 2 – Application for cattle and horses brand $300.00

In the event a brand is not recorded you may request a refund, The Wyoming Livestock Board will retain $50.00 of the application fee for the first specie and $25.00 for each additional species. Fees are subject to change by Wyoming Livestock Board action at any time.

To add a species to an already existing brand, the fee is $100.00 and is fully refundable if not issued.

Submitting An Application

To submit an application, you can either mail it in along with a check to The Wyoming Livestock Board, 1934 Wyott Drive Cheyenne, WY 82002 or email it to brands@wyo.gov and submit your fee on-line at webfeepay.com.

BRAND RENEWAL: All new brands will fall due for renewal in the next renewal cycle. Renewal cycles begin on January 1st of odd numbered years.

LEGAL RECORDING ON APPLICATION: If a brand is to be recorded in more than one name, please indicate if it is:

  • HUSBAND AND WIFE (with right of survivorship)
  • JOINT TENANCY (with right of survivorship)
  • TENANTS IN COMMON (without right of survivorship)
  • PARTENERSHIP (other than a limited or registered limited partnership, applicant must list on the application all partners and agents authorized to act on behalf of the partnership)
  • CORPORATION OR COMPANY (Please provide articles of organization, articles of incorporation, an operating agreement, or any other doc. that must be filed to form the entity; and the names of all persons authorized to act on behalf of the entity and documentation demonstrating the legal authority of those persons to act on behalf of the entity.)
  • TRUST (Person applying to record a brand for a trust must provide a copy of the trust instrument or a certification or affidavit of trust in accordance W.S 4-10-1014)

Applicants should use the word “AND” or the word “OR” between names, not both. The use of commas will default to “AND” on the registration. The use of “AND” or “OR” does not affect ownership rights. However, the use of “AND” or “OR” may affect your financial institution’s endorsement requirements when cashing or depositing checks issued from the sale of livestock.

Please submit up to three (3) choices, they will be researched in the order of preference against a conflict list provided by our brand inspector supervisors and director.

Simply because a brand is not in the brand book does not mean that we are able to issue it. DO NOT APPLY FOR DOTS OR SINGLE CHARCTER BRANDS OR SYMBOLS. When brand research has been completed we will notify you of any locations available for your consideration.

Brand Location

All locations for the selected species will be researched. Those positions are:

  • CATTLE OR BUFFALO brands are registered on Right or Left Shoulder (RSC, LSC), Right or Left Rib (RRC, LRC), or Right or Left Hip (RHC,LHC).
  • HORSE/MULE brands are registered on Right or Left Jaw (RJH, LJH), Right or Left Shoulder (RSH, LSH), Right or Left Hip or Thigh (RHH,LHH), or Right or Left Buttock (RBH, LBH). BUTTOCK BRANDS are placed next to the tail head and only visible from the back of the animal.
  • SHEEP brands are registered on Right or Left Shoulder (RSS, LSS) or Right or Left Hip (RHS, LHS).
  • EARMARKS are optional but must be used if recorded with the brand.

Transfer Of Brands

Brands may be transferred using a Bill of Sale/Transfer Form available through this office or website. Please contact this office for further information on the transfer/ sale of a brand.
